Before Covington became the city that it is today, the area was a frontier settlement with farms and a few mills.
Covington, Kentucky, boasts a rich history intertwined with the Ohio River and the burgeoning industrial era. Founded in 1815 by Thomas Kennedy on land formerly owned by Revolutionary War hero General James Taylor Jr., the city quickly became a vital transportation and commercial hub. Its strategic location across from Cincinnati, Ohio, fueled its growth, drawing German immigrants who shaped its distinctive architecture and cultural heritage. Covington played a significant role in the Civil War era, serving as a key Union supply depot and witnessing firsthand the anxieties of a border state grappling with divided loyalties. Its role in industry, especially distilling and manufacturing, contributed significantly to the economic development of the Northern Kentucky region.
