The Cumberland River near Eddyville is a popular spot for recreational boating and fishing.
While the origin of the town name isn't definitively confirmed, most historians believe it comes from the river eddies around this section of the Cumberland River.
Eddyville, Kentucky, nestled on the banks of the Cumberland River, boasts a history deeply intertwined with the river's role in transportation and commerce. Founded in the early 19th century, its strategic location made it a vital steamboat landing, serving as a hub for trade in agricultural goods and manufactured products. The town's name is believed to derive from the eddy currents in the river, highlighting its close relationship with the waterway. Lyon County, in which Eddyville resides, also saw conflict during the Civil War, and while Eddyville itself wasn't a major battle site, its proximity to the river made it a strategically important area for both Union and Confederate forces. The town's economy has ebbed and flowed with the changing times, transitioning from river trade to agriculture and, more recently, tourism.
Eddyville is perhaps most known as the home of the Kentucky State Penitentiary, often referred to simply as "Eddyville." Opened in 1886, the maximum-security prison has housed some of Kentucky's most notorious criminals and has significantly shaped the town's identity and economy. While the prison isn't a tourist attraction in the typical sense, its presence adds a unique dimension to Eddyville's story. Today, Eddyville offers a blend of historical charm and outdoor recreational opportunities, with access to nearby Lake Barkley and Land Between The Lakes, making it a destination for fishing, boating, and exploring the natural beauty of Western Kentucky.
