Somerset, Kentucky, nestled in the heart of Pulaski County, owes its existence to the strategic location chosen by General Felix Zollicoffer during the Civil War. While not directly founded by him, the presence of Union forces needing supply lines and fortifications in the area spurred the growth of a settlement that would become Somerset. The town was officially incorporated in 1801, predating Zollicoffer's arrival and the Civil War, and was named after Somerset County, New Jersey, the former home of an early settler. Its location near the Cumberland River and its later connection to the railroad helped solidify its importance as a commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural region.
Somerset's fortunes ebbed and flowed with the broader economic tides. The timber industry played a crucial role in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, it is Lake Cumberland, created in 1950 by the Wolf Creek Dam, that has arguably defined Somerset's modern identity. The lake transformed the area into a major tourism destination, attracting boaters, fishermen, and outdoor enthusiasts from across the country. Somerset became known as the "Capital of Lake Cumberland," a testament to its central role in the region's recreational activities.
Today, Somerset balances its historical roots with its modern identity as a tourist haven. Visitors can explore its historic downtown, appreciate its Civil War-era heritage, and take advantage of the natural beauty of Lake Cumberland. This combination of historical significance and outdoor recreation makes Somerset a unique destination in Kentucky.
